The Dangers Of Using Hair Loss Pills

Heady Stuff: Lots of guys reach for finasteride, better known as Propecia, when they notice their hairline starting to recede. It works by blocking an enzyme that turns testosterone into a form that causes thinning hair.  But that same enzyme also helps the brain make chemicals that regulate mood and stress, which means the drug can affect more than just your hair.

The Study: A recent analytical review in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry looked at 20 years of research and found links between finasteride use and depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. Scientists think this happens because the drug reduces brain chemicals called neurosteroids that help regulate mood. For some, these symptoms can continue even after stopping the medication, a condition known as “post-finasteride syndrome.”

The Takeaway: If you’re considering finasteride, talk to your doctor about the mental health risks, especially if you have a history of anxiety or depression. Sure, it might make your hair look better, but that could come at the expense of what’s going on inside your head.

Keep in Mind: This study was an analytical review, not a randomized trial, so think of it as a heads-up (pun intended), not a panic alarm.
