A small new study found that 20 minutes of cycling increased brain-wave activity linked to memory and learning, offering a rare look at how quickly exercise may affect the human brain.

If you’re reading this at work while battling your usual afternoon slump, put down the White Monster and consider taking a brisk walk instead. New research suggests that a short cardio session can quickly affect activity in brain regions involved in learning and memory. Your first instinct might be to flood your system with caffeine when fatigue and brain fog hit, but getting your heart rate up for 20 minutes could be a more useful reset.

What You Should Know About the Study

A study published in Brain Communications found that a single 20-minute bike ride was followed by an increase in a specific type of brain wave linked to learning and memory.

Researchers recorded each participant’s brain activity at rest and again after a short cycling session. They detected more “ripples” originating in the hippocampus and spreading to other areas involved in processing and recalling information.

These ripples are brief bursts of high-frequency activity that help the brain consolidate and retrieve memories, often firing when it replays or strengthens newly learned information. Until now they’d mostly been documented in rodents, since confirming the same pattern in humans requires implanted electrodes.

Going Deeper On What They Measured

The study included 14 people between the ages of 17 and 50 who were being treated for drug-resistant epilepsy and already had electrodes implanted in their brains as part of their care. That gave researchers a rare opportunity to directly record human brain activity.

After a brief warm-up, participants completed 20 minutes of steady cycling on a stationary bike. Researchers measured their brain activity at rest and again after the ride. They found that the hippocampus produced more ripple events post-exercise and that those ripples became more synchronized with brain networks involved in memory retrieval, self-reflection, future planning, and autobiographical memory. Participants who had higher heart rates mid-workout also tended to show larger increases in ripple activity.

Still, the findings should be taken with a grain of salt. The study involved only 14 people, all from a specific medical population, and it did not test whether their memory actually improved. These ripples are considered markers of memory processing, not proof that a short workout will make you remember more. More research is needed to see whether the same effect occurs in larger, healthier populations.
