The Trend: Wellness is personal by nature, so maybe it was only a matter of time before it reached your underwear drawer. Brands like EDN are now producing microplastic-free boxers and briefs, designed with reproductive health in mind.
What People Are Saying: As more research reveals that microplastics are showing up in our water and inside our bodies — even in reproductive organs — people are starting to pay closer attention to the plastics in everyday fabrics. Nylon, polyester, and even a simple spandex waistband can shed microplastics each time they’re worn or washed. The founders of EDN say their products, made in Portugal from organic cotton and other natural fibers, may be a healthier choice because they remove synthetics altogether. (But they’re not the only brand leaning into this trend, check out a great list here.)
What to Know: Some animal studies suggest that microplastics can affect sperm quality, but scientists still don’t know how much these particles from clothing or cosmetics can pass through human skin. Still, switching to natural fibers is a simple way to limit exposure, and the only real tradeoff is cost.
