By 2060, dementia cases are expected to rise to 1 million a year. If it runs in your family, that’s unsettling. The good news is that a growing body of research shows that everyday routines can support brain health as you age.

The Study: A recent study followed more than 2,000 adults at risk of cognitive decline. Half followed a researcher-guided health plan that included exercise, brain games, diet, and socializing, while the other half received regular prompts to choose lifestyle changes that fit their needs and schedules. After two years, both groups improved on tests of executive function. Notably, the self-guided group improved almost as much as the structured one.

The Takeaway: Simple self-chosen changes — eating better, staying social, exercising, and challenging your mind — can support brain health.

Keep in Mind: Benefits were seen primarily in decision-making, not memory.
