You Should Know: Magnesium is essential for hundreds of bodily functions, such as energy production, muscle and nerve health, and even sleep and mood. Many adults fall short of the recommended daily intake, which is why supplements have become a wellness staple.

Going Deeper: There’s more than one kind of magnesium. Citrate supports digestion, glycinate is linked to relaxation and sleep, and oxide helps digestion. Research suggests supplementation may help with sleep, muscle cramps and blood sugar control, but only if you’re deficient. For those with adequate intake, benefits are modest. Too much can cause digestive issues, and megadoses can be dangerous.

Takeaway: Start with foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains before reaching for an expensive pill. If you have trouble sleeping or muscle tightness, ask your doctor about the right type and dose.

Bottom Line: Food first, supplement smart.
