Cozy Food, Better Mood: Those people who count down the days until the start of pumpkin spice latte season might be onto something. New research from San Diego State University suggests that reaching for a warm drink when the weather cools might actually lift your mood and even settle your stomach.

The Study: Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the study looked at 415 adults living in the U.S. Asian participants who consumed more cold drinks during summer reported higher anxiety and more digestive discomfort. White participants who chose hot beverages in winter tended to sleep better and reported fewer depressive symptoms. Interestingly, the results line up with long-held ideas in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine that warn against too much cold consumption.

The Takeaway: Don’t underestimate the power of a warm beverage when it’s cold out. Drinking tea (this is our favorite), coffee, or hot chocolate could support better mood and digestion when the temperature drops.

Keep in Mind: These findings aren’t definitive because the study was small and on self-reported data. Still, they add to other evidence showing that food temperature affects how we feel. So if sipping something warm lifts your spirits during the colder months, then go ahead and pour another mug. Consider it self-care.
