Ozempic Might Do More Than Help You Lose Weight

More Than a Weight Loss Drug: GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have been racking up unexpected health benefits well beyond weight loss, with research linking them to improved heart health and reduced addiction risk. Now the latest unexpected finding involves breast cancer. A large new study from JCO Oncology Practice suggests women taking GLP-1 medications may have substantially lower odds of a breast cancer diagnosis, and the results held up even after researchers controlled for confounding factors like age and BMI.
The Study: Researchers analyzed electronic health records from over 111,000 women aged 45 to 80 with a BMI of 25 or higher who had undergone breast imaging. After carefully matching GLP-1 users with similar non-users, they found that women on these medications had roughly 30% lower breast cancer incidence.
Takeaway: The leading theory is that GLP-1 drugs may reduce risk in part by improving blood sugar regulation and reducing inflammation, two metabolic factors already linked to cancer development.
Keep in Mind: GLP-1 medications are not approved for cancer prevention. But this study does contribute to a growing body of evidence that metabolic health may play a bigger role in breast cancer risk than previously believed.
