How Mindfulness May Help Couples Feel Stronger Together

Here, Together: Conflict is a given in any relationship at some point. However, a new study from the University of Georgia suggests that a simple habit may help couples feel more capable of navigating the inevitable rough patches. Mindfulness, or the practice of paying attention to what is happening in the moment rather than reacting on autopilot, was linked with greater confidence that the relationship could weather difficult times.
The Study: Researchers surveyed more than 400 couples enrolled in government support programs and asked about mindfulness and relationship confidence. Partners who described themselves as more mindful tended to feel more certain they could work through challenges together. They also reported higher-quality relationships.
The Takeaway: Mindfulness is a skill that gets stronger with practice, and daily habits like meditation, prayer, or simple breathing exercises can help cultivate it (we use this app as a part of our practice). Over time, becoming more mindful may help support better communication and strengthen your relationship, too.
Keep In Mind: The effects were not the same for everyone. When women reported being more mindful, their male partners felt more confident in the relationship. When men reported higher mindfulness, there was no effect on their female partners’ confidence.
