All training, from cardio to muscle-building workouts, follows the principle of progressive overload: To keep making progress, your workouts need to become slightly more challenging over time. When lifting weights, that may mean adding reps or load. With walking, the techniques below introduce new demands through incline, speed, resistance, or terrain. The key is to gradually build on that challenge as your body adapts.
If you walk daily, choose one or two of these techniques to add to your weekly routine. Once you find an intensifier you like, stick with it and progress it over the next few months.
1. Add Incline, Hills, or Stairs
Why: Walking uphill increases the demand on your glutes, quads, hamstrings, and calves, forcing your lower body to work harder than it would on flat ground.
