AI Is Changing How We Judge Our Own Intelligence

Armchair Experts: We all know someone who speed-watches one TikTok or YouTube video, and suddenly feels ready to take on the experts. Algorithm-driven feeds can make a small amount of information feel like the whole picture, which can lead to overestimating our own skills or knowledge. And now, new research suggests artificial intelligence may be exaggerating that effect even further.
The Study: A paper published in Computers in Human Behavior found that people who used AI tools to solve reasoning problems did perform better than those who didn’t. The catch is, their confidence grew faster than their actual understanding. AI helped people arrive at better answers while making them worse judges of how good their performance really was. Researchers describe this as a new twist on the classic Dunning–Kruger effect, where confidence outweighs competence.
The Takeaway: This is not a reason to avoid AI completely. However, it’s a reminder that tools can make us feel more capable while also blurring the awareness of our own limits. As a result, it’s important to be thoughtful about how we use them.
Keep In Mind: Being more familiar with AI does not protect against this effect. In fact, people who thought they were especially AI-literate were often the most overconfident.
