Namaste Doing Yoga: Headlines suggesting yoga “doesn’t help your heart” oversimplify what’s actually an important, nuanced study. New research found that yoga alone may not significantly improve cardiovascular fitness or heart function compared to aerobic exercise.

The Study: Researchers reviewed data from more than 1,000 participants across multiple trials. While yoga improves flexibility, balance, and stress reduction — key components of overall wellness — the study found that it didn’t deliver the same cardiovascular benefits as higher-intensity exercise like Pilates or interval training.

The Takeaway: That doesn’t mean yoga “doesn’t work.” It means different types of movement serve different purposes. Yoga can lower stress (and by extension, blood pressure), improve mobility, and support recovery, all of which can contribute indirectly to heart health.

Keep In Mind: If heart health is your goal, combine yoga with moderate-to-vigorous aerobic activity a few times a week. Think of yoga as part of a balanced fitness ecosystem, not a stand-alone cure-all. Mix what you enjoy with what your body needs. Your heart will thank you for the variety.
