Why You Didn’t Catch It: Have you ever had the experience where the same bug goes on a rampage through your house, eventually infecting everyone but you? According to new research published in Nature Genetics, there may be a reason for that written right into your cells.
The Study: Researchers at the Salk Institute analyzed blood samples from 110 people with different genetic backgrounds and life histories. Their study mapped the epigenomes (the molecular tags that control which genes are switched on or off in each cell) of four major immune cell types. It revealed a pattern where genetic inheritance and life experience appear to shape immune cells in fundamentally different ways. Genes tend to establish stable, long-term immune programs, while lived experience fine-tunes how cells react to specific threats in the moment.
The Takeaway: Your immune system is a living record of everything your body has been through. Past illnesses and environmental exposures leave lasting molecular changes that influence how your immune cells respond for years to come.
Keep in Mind: Although scientists can now read these molecular patterns, this research is still in the foundational stage. Translating it into personalized treatments is still years away.
