You Should Know: Could the key to unlocking better health be found in a beam of light? Infrared light therapy is often associated with skincare (like with those borderline creepy red light face masks), but the many purported benefits for the body go way deeper than the surface

Going Deeper: There’s strong research in support of infrared light therapy (“photobiomodulation”, for you nerds out there). Red light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum and can penetrate the skin at specific wavelengths. It targets ATP, which is essentially fuel for mitochondria, and stimulates cell growth, repair, and signalling. Infrared light therapy can stimulate hair follicles and collagen production, as well as repair damaged tissue and wounds. It can also regulate immune cells to lower inflammation and reduce pain, depending on how chronic or severe it is. Infrared light can also improve blood circulation.

Takeaway: The science on infrared light therapy is solid for some things, though not everything. More research is needed on its effects on heart health, sleep, mood, cognitive function, and athletic performance. 

Bottom Line: Infrared light has many uses, but it isn’t going to fix every single ache or ailment. If you’re curious, try out an infrared sauna at a gym or wellness center or ask your physician about in-office treatments.
