Stick to It: Ever notice how one missed workout can quietly turn into a missed week — and then a whole abandoned plan? If you’ve ever fallen off a routine after a late night or a sick day, new research suggests it’s not a motivation problem. It’s a mindset problem.

The Study: Behavioral scientists at the University of Michigan ran focus groups with 27 adults ages 19 to 79 who had tried — and failed — to maintain exercise habits. A consistent theme emerged: “all-or-nothing” thinking. Participants tended to define success so rigidly that any deviation from the plan (sleeping in, missing a class, working late) felt like failure. Instead of adjusting, they quit altogether. The plan didn’t bend, so it broke.

The Takeaway: Flexibility and consistency are key. People were more likely to sustain exercise when they reframed workouts as adaptable — something that could shrink, shift, or change form depending on the day.

Keep in Mind: This was a small, qualitative study, so it doesn’t prove cause and effect. But it aligns with broader behavior research showing that self-compassion and adaptable goals support long-term habits. The science-backed move, evidently, is to loosen the rules.
