The Trend: Raw milk has probably been all over your feed recently. However, the downside of raw milk received fresh attention when Ballerina Farm, the hugely popular influencer brand run by Hannah Neeleman, had to stop selling it after tests found high levels of bacteria. More tragically, a newborn in New Mexico recently died from listeria that officials think came from the mom drinking raw milk while pregnant.
What People Are Saying: Enthusiasts say pasteurization kills all the good stuff in milk and that going raw helps with everything from skin health to gut issues, you name it. It’s very much a “natural equals better” argument. But the FDA (and most medical experts) are clear that raw milk can make you really sick.
What to Know: So here’s the deal with pasteurization — it just heats milk enough to kill dangerous bacteria without significantly reducing its nutritional value. Most experts agree that whatever tiny nutritional trade-off exists is more than offset by one big advantage: milk that won’t make you seriously sick.
