How to Prepare Your Medicine Cabinet for Flu Season

‘Tis the Season: We can catch a cold or the flu any time of year (not to mention COVID and RSV), but cases really ramp up in fall and winter. These infections hit their peak between December and February and stretch into spring. With flu season beginning even earlier this year, preparing for a sick day now before you or your kids actually fall ill is a must. Here are the essentials you need for a well-stocked medicine cabinet or “sick day kit.”
How to Do It: Experts recommend devoting one shelf or container exclusively to sick-day supplies for easy access and restocking. It should include ibuprofen or naproxen for pain and inflammation; acetaminophen to reduce fever; decongestant spray or pills; honey, guaifenesin, and dextromethorphan for coughs; a thermometer; vapor chest rub; and saline nasal spray or rinse. A few bottles of electrolyte drinks and a humidifier are also smart picks. Consult your kids’ pediatrician now about medication guidelines you’ll need later.
The Benefits: OTC products can decrease symptoms and make you more comfortable as viruses run their course. Of course, you can also take steps to lower your risk of catching them in the first place: frequent hand washing, wearing masks, disinfecting surfaces, and getting flu and COVID vaccines.
