Can Magnesium Cure Your Anxiety?

You Should Know: Magnesium is a go-to for sleep, but word is spreading that it could be a boon for anxiety, too. While some findings have been promising, they’re not yet conclusive.
Going Deeper: Magnesium is involved in hundreds of different biochemical processes in the body, and it’s known for its relaxation effect. It stimulates the production of the calming inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which helps to calm the body from anxiety, stress, and fear, and encourages sleep. Magnesium also helps to regulate levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol is necessary, but it can also make anxiety worse. And evidence suggests that magnesium deficiencies may be linked to higher rates of anxiety.
Takeaway: The research isn’t totally solid yet. Only a few studies have specifically analyzed magnesium for anxiety, and the findings of those were mixed. For those who already get enough magnesium, taking more isn’t going to reduce your anxiety.
Bottom Line: Taking magnesium likely won’t cause harm (though talk to your physician first to make sure), but it can’t — and shouldn’t — replace prescription medication, therapy, or other evidence-based anxiety treatments.
