The Trend: Remember doing jumping jacks in gym class? Well, who knew back then that you were doing calisthenics? These types of bodyweight exercises, like push-ups, squats, and planks, are back and having a serious resurgence. What started as a pandemic necessity (when gyms closed and dumbbells sold out everywhere) has become a full-blown fitness movement with staying power

What People Are Saying: Fitness experts are pretty enthusiastic about this development. Research shows that progressive bodyweight training can build muscle strength just as effectively as traditional weightlifting when you do it consistently. The secret, however, is to keep making the exercises a bit more challenging instead of just cranking out more reps (think graduating from knee push-ups to regular push-ups to decline push-ups). TikTokers like it too, with videos ranging from basic planks to seriously impressive advanced moves. And fans love that it’s straightforward and free, plus you can do it literally anywhere.

What to Know: Studies show that bodyweight training really works by improving muscle thickness and aerobic capacity. While it may not build maximum strength as well as using heavy barbells can, calisthenics are still great for staying active when you’re too busy to hit the gym or on a budget.
