Manifesting Is Good, Actually

You Should Know: If manifestation were as simple as thinking positively or asking the universe for what we want, we’d all be blissfully happy with perfect bodies and bulging bank accounts. Some say manifestation absolutely works, others say it’s misguided malarkey, but the truth may lie somewhere in between. Manifestation may actually be legit — just not how you might think.

Going Deeper: James Doty, founding director of Stanford’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education, argued in his 2024 book, Mind Magic, that manifestation can have real benefits when done properly. It starts with calming our stressed-out, distracted nervous systems through breathwork, meditation, or other relaxation. Next, spend five minutes visualizing the intention, write it down, and then repeat it out loud daily.

Takeaway: Doty said this repetition rewires our brains to actively seek opportunities aligned with our intention. When a chance arises, we can spot it and work toward it with more focus. It taps into our brain’s neuroplasticity — its capacity to change — as well as its ability to prioritize information so our goals become deeply embedded in our subconscious.

Bottom Line: This concept of manifestation isn’t about making a wish and waiting for unseen powers to grant it. It’s our own minds that are doing most of the work.
