You Should Know: Even though we may jokingly call a craving for sweet treats a chocolate “addiction,” we know real addictions are far more serious and potentially harmful. Singer Robert Palmer hinted at this idea in his ’80s classic, but it begs the question: can we really be addicted to love?

Going Deeper: Love addiction is not a formal mental-health diagnosis — it’s more like a set of behaviors. These include clinginess, obsessive thoughts, serial monogamy, an inability to be alone, and separation anxiety. Love addiction hasn’t been widely researched, though one study described it as an overwhelming, compulsive need for love, affection, and attention from others.

Takeaway: Love addiction and sex addiction aren’t the same thing. Compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) is a recognized condition and diagnosis. Sex, though, can be part of a love addiction. Experts say the concept of love addiction and attachment styles overlap. A 2025 study found a positive correlation between love addiction and anxious attachment and a negative correlation with avoidant attachment.

Bottom Line: If behaviors around relationships disrupt daily life, damage emotional wellbeing, and feel chronically stressful, codependent, and all-consuming, getting help is a good idea — regardless of whether a formal diagnosis exists.
