Collagen Check: Few supplements have had a run like collagen — praised for everything from smoother skin to stronger joints to better gut health. The science, though, has been a bit all over the place. Now, a new umbrella study is helping cut through some of that noise.

The Study: Researchers pulled together 16 systematic reviews covering 113 randomized controlled trials and nearly 8,000 participants. From there, they ran meta-analyses on specific outcomes to see where collagen actually delivers.

The Takeaway: The strongest evidence showed up in a few key areas: improved skin elasticity and hydration, better joint function, and modest gains in lean muscle mass. There were also some signals around body composition and metabolic health, though less consistent. One thing it didn’t seem to help? Post-workout recovery.

Keep in Mind: Collagen naturally declines with age — showing up as looser skin, creakier joints, and gradual muscle loss. The benefits of supplementation appear to build over time, meaning consistency matters more than quick fixes.
