You Should Know: Conventional deodorants and antiperspirants often contain aluminum compounds (to block sweat) and parabens or phthalates (as preservatives and fragrance stabilizers). These ingredients have long been accused of contributing to breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, kidney disease, and hormone disruption.

Going Deeper: Wellness influencers would have you believe conventional deodorants are as bad for your health as smoking cigarettes. Despite all the talk online, research hasn’t found solid evidence linking them to serious disease. The FDA and American Cancer Society both say the data doesn’t support those claims. So far, there’s no evidence pointing to “natural” deodorants as better

Takeaway: What is real is that some people experience irritation or allergic reactions to aluminum or certain synthetic fragrances. Natural deodorants, which skip those ingredients, can be gentler. You should know, though, that they don’t stop sweating — just odor.

Bottom Line: If you like natural formulas and don’t mind reapplying frequently, go for it. But there’s no need to panic about traditional deodorant. The bigger win is finding one that works for your body and your skin, not necessarily the one that has as few ingredients as possible.
