No, It Doesn’t Really Matter If You Run on a Treadmill or Outside

You Should Know: When winter weather pushes runners indoors, many wonder if treadmill miles “count.” Physiologically, both treadmill and outdoor running train your cardiovascular system similarly. But small differences exist: research shows slightly greater fat loss and strength in trained runners who run outdoors compared with those who train on treadmills.

Going Deeper: Outdoor running forces your body to adapt to real-world variables like wind resistance, heat, and bumps in the ground. Those challenges recruit more stabilizing muscles and can increase energy expenditure. Treadmills, by contrast, reduce impact variability and remove environmental unpredictability, which can make training more controlled but also slightly less demanding. Setting the treadmill incline to 1% can better simulate outdoor effort, but it doesn’t fully replicate factors like wind drag or balance demands.

Takeaway: If you’re chasing performance improvements or preparing for outdoor races, logging at least some miles outside is beneficial. But if your goal is general fitness or consistency through bad weather, treadmill training delivers nearly identical cardiovascular and metabolic benefits.

Bottom Line: When it’s 10 degrees and icy, don’t overthink it. The best run is the one you’ll actually do.
