Out of the Blue? How the Color of Light Could Be Used to Treat Mental Illness
Pablo Merchan Montes/Unsplash
You Should Know: The color of light around you affects how you feel. Blue wavelengths (the kind screens and standard overhead LEDs release) signal alertness to your brain — and after dark, can suppress melatonin and throw your sleep off, your hormones and mood following suit. Warmer tones, like ambers and oranges, have the opposite effect. Research from UC Davis found that amber light produced the fastest and greatest stress reductioncompared to other colors, possibly because our brains associate it with sunsets and campfires.
Going Deeper: A psychiatric unit in Trondheim, Norway built an environment to put this to the test for their patients. In the ward, filters dropped over windows and lights shifted to amber as evening hit, eliminating blue wavelengths. In the randomized trial of 476 patients, those in the blue-depleted environment showed more clinical improvement and less aggressive behavior than those under standard lighting.
Takeaway: You don't need to make drastic leaps to test this. Switching to warmer bulbs, using night mode on your phone, or just dimming lights can help shift the mood of your space.
Bottom Line: The color of the light around you can help regulate your mood more than you might think.

The Case for Your Second Cup of Coffee

Percolate Up: Need another reason to keep drinking coffee? A new study found drinking a moderate amount of coffee a day (two to three cups) could lower your risk of depression and anxiety and reduce stress.
The Study: Researchers analyzed data from nearly 462,000 participants from the UK Biobank, aged 40 to 69 in good mental health at the start of the research. There were three comparison groups: those who drank a moderate amount of coffee, more than three cups, and zero coffee. The researchers followed up 13 years later to see who’d been diagnosed with a mood or stress-related disorder. Drinking two to three cups a day was associated with the lowest risk of a mental health disorder.
The Takeaway: The type of coffee didn’t matter — instant, decaf, or regular ground. Drinking five or more cups a day was linked to a much higher risk, but zero cups were tied to worse depression and stress rates. The association between coffee and mood was more pronounced in men, though researchers aren’t totally clear why.
The Study: Coffee isn’t guaranteed to prevent a mental health condition, nor can it treat one. And one cup is about 8 ounces, not venti-size.

Personal Development
Dating Apps Have Now Entered the Wellness Space
Midjourney
The Trend: Dating apps have now become the default, even as more and more people admit they kind of hate using them. And now, the latest attempt to fix that is to replace the endless scroll with real-life wellness experiences. Sitch frames finding love as a longevity hack and pairs AI matchmaking with in-person wellness events. Lunge matches users based on their favorite fitness scene, and hosts run clubs for singles. There's also Ateam, an invite-only community for the wellness-oriented.
What People Are Saying: Around 78% of dating app users report feeling mentally and emotionally drained by the current model, and over 70% of Gen Z say they'd rather meet someone organically but don't know how to make it happen. So these apps are trying to create events that feel worth attending, whether or not you meet someone.
What to Know: Good relationships are increasingly recognized as good for your health. The problem is that, these days, the way most of us are trying to find them has become its own source of stress and angst. These platforms are trying to repair that disconnect.
This: Water + light movement Not That: Phone first thing
Grabbing your phone first thing floods your brain with input before you’ve even woken up. A minute of water + movement helps your body come online first. You can scroll later — your nervous system doesn’t need it at 7 a.m.

What We're Cooking
Grilled Pork Chops with Fresh Nectarine Salsa
Courtesy: Allrecipes
Serves: 4 | Cook Time: ~35 minutes
Grilled pork chops are simple on their own, but topping them with a fresh fruit salsa makes them feel like something special. Here, sweet nectarines are tossed with tomato, onion, cilantro, lime juice, and a pinch of red pepper flakes for a salsa that’s bright, juicy, and just a little spicy.
The pork is rubbed with cumin and chili powder, grilled until lightly charred, and finished with a generous spoonful of the salsa. The combination of smoky meat and fresh fruit makes for an easy, summery dinner.

HEALTHY HABIT
The Kitchen Counter Squat Habit
While waiting for coffee to brew, leftovers to heat, or the kettle to boil, do 5–10 slow bodyweight squats. Short strength “snacks” like this can improve mobility and keep movement from becoming something you only do at the gym. Tiny reps performed often are more useful than you’d think.
