“Beef tea.” That is what doctors would prescribe to patients to treat anything from depression to dementia back in the middle of the 19th century. It sounds gross, but in practice what patients were drinking wasn’t that different from beef bouillon. Learn more about the odd history of the medicinal drink here.

Early Birds and Night Owls Don’t Build Muscle the Same

Muscle O’Clock: When it comes to building and maintaining muscle, a new review suggests it’s not just what you do that matters — it may also be when you do it. Your circadian rhythm, or internal body clock, influences everything from hormone production to appetite, metabolism, sleep quality, and muscle recovery. And that could give morning larks and night owls different health trajectories over time.

The Study: In a review published in Nutrients, researchers analyzed prior studies on circadian rhythms, muscle protein synthesis, exercise timing, sleep, meal timing, and metabolism. They found that people with an evening chronotype (“night owls”) tend to have behaviors linked to poorer muscle health, including irregular sleep schedules, later eating patterns, lower physical activity levels, and worse metabolic markers. These factors may make it harder to preserve muscle mass and strength over time.

The Takeaway: The headline here isn’t that night owls are doomed to lose muscle. Rather, the review suggests that consistent routines are an important key to muscle health. Prioritizing adequate protein, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep — and avoiding irregular sleep and eating schedules — may help protect muscle health for evening chronotypes.

Keep in Mind: Working with your chronotype, not against it, will yield greater consistency in healthy habits, thus promoting muscle health.

Microdosing GLP-1s: What the Science Actually Says

The Trend: Microdosing is the most recent take on GLP-1s. Instead of the standard weekly dose, some people are taking smaller amounts (sometimes by “counting clicks” on the injection pen) in hopes of avoiding side effects or getting benefits beyond weight loss, like improved heart health or reduced inflammation. The trend has taken off mainly via social media influencers and a handful of physicians who support the practice.

What People Are Saying: Some influencers and physicians contend that microdosing makes for a “gentler” GLP-1 experience, having noticed fewer digestive issues than with the full dose. Some doctors also note microdosing can have anti-inflammatory benefits, including potential relief for conditions like psoriasis. Big names like Tufts Medicine and the American Diabetes Association aren’t endorsing microdosing though. There are no trials comparing microdosing to FDA-approved dosing, and these lower doses don’t consistently provide the same cardiovascular or metabolic benefits.

What to Know: Microdosing GLP-1s is experimental and most feedback on the regimen is anecdotal. The mild side effects people have reported aren’t guaranteed, and even small doses of a GLP-1 can still slow digestion. Microdosing is not backed by research, but if you’re still interested, speak with a doctor for guidance.

Worried About Their World Cup Betting?

Bet Your Bottom Dollar: The World Cup is on track to be the biggest sports betting event in history, with forecasters projecting more than $50 billion wagered worldwide. With over 65% of Americans now legally able to place bets and mobile apps making it easier than ever, the odds that someone you care about is caught up in it are pretty high. So if you’ve been noticing some worrying signs in a loved one, here’s how to actually have a conversation with them.

How To Do It: Wait for a chill moment to bring it up (doing it right after a loss or during a game is a bad idea). Then use “I” statements to point out any specific behavioral changes you’ve noticed. It’s less confrontational, and they’ll be easier to reach if they don’t feel on the defensive.

The Benefits: Getting ahead of a potential problem can make a difference, as the financial damage from sports betting can compound quickly, with research showing that bankruptcy rates climb by about 10% in states where online betting is available. Catching a problem before it spirals into missed credit card payments or secret loans is exactly the point of bringing it up while the World Cup is ongoing.

Serves: 10-12 | Cook Time: 10 minutes

A glaze made of honey, lime juice, and cayenne adds sweetness and a subtle heat to this watermelon, while a four minute stint on the grill infuses it with smoky flavor. Accessorized with grill marks and garnished with mint chiffonade, this easy upgrade takes a summer barbecue staple to the next level.
