A Water Bottle Might Be the Most Underrated Stress Tool

You Should Know: Here's a new stress tip you probably have not heard before, and it has nothing to do with breath work or journaling. A recent study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that how much fluid you drink may influence how your body responds at the hormonal level.

The Study: Researchers recruited 32 healthy adults aged 18 to 35 and divided them into two groups based on fluid intake. After monitoring them for a week, all of them completed the Trier Social Stress Test. They discovered that the low-hydration group had significantly greater cortisol spikes. And they reported no increased thirst, despite urine markers confirming dehydration.

The Takeaway: The researchers surmise that under-hydrated people may be walking around with a stress system that's primed to overreact. That's because vasopressin, a hormone that holds onto water when you are running low, also activates the pathway triggering cortisol.

Keep in Mind: This study was small and covered only a limited age range, so the results may not reflect the experiences of everyone. But there's no harm in aiming for two liters of fluid a day to help lower your stress levels.

Your Doctor Wants to See Your Wearable Data — Here's How to Share It

Beyond the Office Visit: If you've been gathering heart rate, sleep, HRV, and recovery data for months, it may be able to help at your next doctor’s appointment.

The Background: The American Academy of Neurology recently issued informal guidance, covered by NPR, on using data from an Oura Ring, Fitbit, Garmin, Whoop, or Apple Watch in clinical conversations. Bringing trends to your doctor's visits can give a physician context they wouldn't normally get in a short appointment, and may flag patterns like cardiac arrhythmias that warrant a closer look. They aren't diagnostic tools and can produce falsely alarming (or reassuring) readings, so the goal is mainly a sharper conversation with better follow-up questions.

How to Do It: The AAN's new guidance is to report patterns, so pull a multi-week summary before your next appointment. Compare what's changed (sleep dropping, resting heart rate increasing, etc.) to what's been going on in your life — a flu, a stressful transition, new workouts, a medication shift, etc. Then ask your doctor a question and have the data to back it up if they need it. But don’t present a 10-page document at your 30-minute appointment; your doctor’s time is short, so summaries are better.

Is Chronic Stress Behind the Rise of Shingles in Younger Adults?

The Trend: Consider this a kind of medical Freaky Friday — but one sided, and not featuring Lindsay Lohan (at least to our knowledge): more young people are getting shingles. The virus has a reputation for being an older person’s illness — and while most shingles cases are in adults over 50, cases in people in their 30s and 40s have been on the rise in recent years. 

What People Are Saying: After we get chickenpox, the varicella virus stays dormant in our nerves for decades (though not everyone who’s had chickenpox will get shingles). A shingles outbreak happens when that virus gets “reawakened” and travels along a nerve pathway until it emerges as a painful rash in a (usually) small area of skin. There are many reasons why this happens, but the common denominator is a weakened immune system. Among younger adults, the top factor causing this is stress — and prolonged daily stress is increasingly prevalent.

What to Know: Chronic stress makes us susceptible to shingles by keeping the body in a suspended “fight or flight” state, taxing the immune system. When we’re stressed all the time, levels of the stress hormone cortisol stay high and cause inflammation. High cortisol messes with sleep, too, which also weakens immune defenses.
