Not long ago, psychedelics were firmly in the “fringe” bucket — more counterculture than clinical care. Now, a new executive order is fast-tracking research into compounds like psilocybin, MDMA, and ibogaine, cutting red tape and putting real funding behind their potential as treatments for depression, PTSD, and addiction. As the science evolves, we’ll keep breaking down what’s real, what’s promising, and what it could actually mean for your mental health.

This Morning Coffee Habit May Boost Your Mood

Bottoms Up: Most advice around coffee is all about what not to do — drink it too late, and you’ll wreck your sleep and throw off your impulse control. But new research flips the script. A recent study suggests that drinking coffee within a specific window may actually boost your mood and set you up for a better day.

The Study: Researchers used a process called experience sampling method (ESM), which captured data from participants in their daily lives, not in a lab. They gathered more than 28,000 surveys from 236 participants between the ages of 18 and 29. They also examined factors that could potentially moderate caffeine’s effects, including time of day, sleep quality, mental health, and social setting.

The Takeaway: Researchers found drinking coffee within 2.5 hours of waking in the morning had the strongest link to increased enthusiasm, happiness, and contentment. This was consistent across all participants, regardless of mental health or other factors. In some participants, they even found a connection between this timeframe and decreased negative affect, like sadness.

Keep in Mind: Data was self-reported, but the research supports sticking with early caffeine consumption is better for mood and for sleep.

The New Cosmetic Fix for High Heel Pain

Fleet Feet: Apparently, there's a physiological reason you keep reaching for those comfy sneakers or flats on a night out, even though you used to favor your favorite heels. The fatty padding at the bottom of your feet naturally breaks down over time, to the point that some folks are now turning to foot fillers — injectable hyaluronic acid or body fat used to restore that lost cushioning — to address the issue.

What People Are Saying: A small clinical study found that about a third of participants reported no pain six months after a single hyaluronic acid injection, and those who still had some pain could wear heels roughly twice as long as before. Fat injections are increasingly the preferred option because they may last up to two years, compared to six to nine months for hyaluronic acid fillers.

What to Know: Practitioners caution that feet are more complex to inject than the face, so selecting a provider with the right expertise is important. A podiatrist is your best starting point for figuring out whether fillers or a more accessible option, like custom orthotics, makes sense for you.

The Real Science on Fluoride in Your Water

You Should Know: A new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found no link between fluoridated drinking water and negative impacts on brain health in 10,000 people tracked from adolescence to age 80. This addresses one of many concerns about fluoride, but is there a right amount to consume?

Going Deeper: The U.S. Public Health Service recommends 0.7 mg/L in community water, which is around average across U.S. municipal supplies (though natural groundwater can vary). The WHO’s upper guideline is 1.5 mg/L, above which dental fluorosis (cosmetic enamel changes) is common. Skeletal issues from long-term over-exposure usually appear above 3 mg/L. But cut back too much, and you won’t get the cavity protection. After all, that’s the reason there’s fluoride in your toothpaste.

Takeaway: Too much fluoride affects bone health, too little increases your chances of dental decay. Most people find the right balance in fluoridated tap water plus fluoride toothpaste. Additional supplementation could edge you over that balanced sweet spot. On well water? Test your supply.

Bottom Line: The goal should be to have enough fluoride to protect your teeth without stacking up too many sources.

Confit Halibut With Tomatoes & Preserved Lemon

Serves: 2-3 | Cook Time: 20 minutes

Protein + produce makes a winning weeknight dinner, but the same old sheet pan recipe can drive anyone to order takeout. This recipe keeps it simple while delivering big flavor in just 20 minutes. In a Dutch oven, nestle buttery halibut with aromatics, cherry tomatoes, Castelvetrano olives, and preserved lemon. Add just enough olive oil to coat everything — using a bit of fat creates a rich, jammy texture. Save the leftover infused oil to cook a carb of your choice, or stick with crusty bread to soak up every bit of flavor.

❦ HEALTHY HABIT

Kitchen Counter Stretch

While waiting for food to cook, place your hands on the counter and gently hinge forward into a hamstring stretch. Hold for 20 seconds, then stand tall again. It’s a convenient way to loosen the back and legs during everyday moments.
