If you have acne creams from retailers like Walgreens, La Roche-Posay, or Proactive — you may want to pay attention to this. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a recall notice on Tuesday of this week for lots of six different acne products for possible benzene contamination. Long term benzene exposure is linked to leukemia and other types of cancer. To see the full list of products being recalled, check here.

Does a Banana Ruin the Nutritional Value of Your Smoothie?

You Should Know: A viral nutrition debate has people side-eyeing their smoothies. The claim: bananas contain an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase (PPO) that breaks down flavanols — beneficial plant compounds found in berries and other foods like cocoa, grapes, and tea. The controversy stems from a 2023 study showing that a banana-based smoothie led to lower flavanol absorption compared to a smoothie made without banana.

Going Deeper: The study is real, but the internet may have run too far with the findings. While PPO does appear to reduce flavanol availability, bananas don’t “cancel out” the nutritional value of other fruits. Everything in your smoothie still provides fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Nutrition experts tend to agree that the great banana debate is splitting hairs for most of us. In general, most people don’t need to worry about flavanol absorption — it’s more important to eat enough fruits, vegetables, and fiber in the first place.

Takeaway: If maximizing flavanol absorption is your goal, you may want to pair berries with lower-PPO fruits like mangoes, oranges, or pineapple. But a smoothie with banana is still a nutritious choice.

Bottom Line: Bananas may slightly reduce absorption of one group of beneficial compounds, but they don’t turn a healthy smoothie into an unhealthy one.

The Maternal Health Update That’s Long Overdue

Most people assume nutrition recommendations for pregnancy and breastfeeding are based on research conducted on mothers. The reality is more complicated.

Many of today’s standards trace back to guidelines established in 1941. Of the nearly 1 million people whose data informed those recommendations, fewer than 5% were pregnant or breastfeeding women, and most were men.

Since then, hundreds of studies have expanded our understanding of maternal nutrition. Needed is calling on Congress and federal agencies to update nutrition standards using modern, population-specific research that reflects the needs of women today. If you believe mothers deserve recommendations grounded in today’s science, sign the petition and help push the conversation forward.

A Single Workout Can Reduce Cigarette Cravings by a Half-Hour

Bad Habit: Smoking cigarettes is bad for your health. That much is fact. Yet, according to the most recent data, nearly 10% of U.S. adults still smoke them. That’s an all-time low — and a testament to public health efforts aimed at tobacco cessation — but it shows that bad habits die hard. Thankfully for those who still smoke, new research shows an unexpected healthy habit may help reduce cravings.

The Study: Published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science in April 2026, a new report looked at the effects of exercise on cigarette smoking habits, including cravings and abstinence. The systematic review included 59 studies and determined that exercise increases the likelihood of achieving long-term abstinence, reduces cigarette consumption by about two cigarettes per day, and reduces cigarette cravings for up to 30 minutes post-exercise.

The Takeaway: You may not be able to out-exercise a bad diet, but it appears you can out-exercise a cigarette craving — and use physical activity as a tool for quitting.

Keep in Mind: The study didn’t show a link between exercise and long-term cravings, and the certainty of evidence for abstinence was rated as low due to heterogeneity in the data. Also, this review didn’t look at use of vaping or e-cigarettes, so the findings don’t necessarily apply.

How to Have a Difficult Conversation

Talk It Out: We all dread hearing these four little words: “We need to talk.” Difficult conversations aren’t fun, whether they’re with a supervisor or colleague, friend or romantic partner, or neighbor or family member. They may be necessary and unavoidable, but broaching a tough topic often entails saying things that people don’t want to hear. Done right, though, a difficult conversation can open up a world of understanding — and improve the relationship.

How to Do It: Before initiating a tough conversation, think about the core issue to keep it focused. Give the person a head’s up beforehand with an idea of what you need to talk about. Choose an appropriate time and place — in person is best. If eye contact feels like too much, sit side by side. Start the conversation with empathy to form common ground. At the end, thank them for talking with you. If the problem hasn’t been resolved, emphasize that you want to work it out alongside them.

The Benefits: Honesty can be hard, but it’s a vital component to good personal and professional relationships. It builds trust, authenticity, and security. Part of honesty is also being honest with yourself and reflecting on the conversation, what role you’ve played in the issue, and what you can do to improve it.

The Case for Updating Pregnancy Nutrition Standards

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are among the most nutritionally demanding stages of life, yet many of the nutrition standards still referenced today were established more than 80 years ago.

Needed is urging policymakers to modernize maternal nutrition guidelines using current research focused on pregnant and breastfeeding women, not data collected primarily from men decades ago.

If evidence-based women’s health matters to you, take a closer look at the campaign and sign the petition calling for updated standards.
