The Trend: From at-home blood panels to urine tests for menopause, self-test health kits are seemingly everywhere — and increasingly promoted by influencers on social media. Getting to skip the waiting room and doctors visit for answers in the comfort of your home does have its appeal. And the idea fits right in with the broader shift toward self-directed wellness, alongside wearables and symptom-checking AI chatbots.

What People Are Saying: Fans love the convenience and privacy. But doctors are saying proceed with caution. A BMJ review found that many over-the-counter self-tests lacked clear instructions, accuracy evidence, and guidance on what to do once you received your results. Mail-in kits using certified labs tend to be more reliable. But the inexpensive, retail-shelf tests can be misleading, potentially prompting unnecessary anxiety (or false reassurance).

What to Know: Self-testing isn’t all bad. Kits processed in CLIA-certified labs use the same technology as clinical tests. But a result without medical input could lead to over-diagnosing or under-treating. Why Seasonal Depression Can Sometimes Extend Into Spring

You Should Know: After a long, cold winter, the first signs of spring — sunny days, blooming flowers, chirping birds, warmer temperatures — are most welcome. But for some people, seasonal depression (commonly called seasonal affective disorder, or SAD) can linger into spring.

Going Deeper: Experts don’t yet have a total grasp on why seasonal depression can extend beyond winter, but several factors may play a role. Increased sunlight and daylight saving time may throw off the circadian rhythm and disrupt sleep. Uncomfortable spring allergies, unbalanced neurotransmitters, or sensitivity to warmer temperatures may also contribute.

Takeaway: Lifestyle-based remedies for any seasonal depression are the same, though they might take a few weeks to take effect. Moving the body is great for mental health, and it’s easier to do outside now that it's not bitterly cold. Sitting in front of a SAD lamp or light box for 30 minutes each morning can also help, and spending time with friends and family can boost mood and help you feel less isolated. 

Bottom Line: Springtime seasonal depression is typically temporary, usually resolving itself by April or May, but consider seeing a doctor if it doesn’t go away or symptoms worsen.

What If Meat Could Slow Brain Aging? It Might If You Have This Gene

Beef Barrier: A growing body of research links diet to brain health, and now a new study is getting very specific about it. For people with the APOE ε4 gene — the strongest known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease — eating more meat may help protect against cognitive decline.

The Study: Researchers followed 2,157 older adults in Sweden (average age ~71) for up to 15 years, none of whom had dementia at the start. Participants completed detailed food questionnaires to estimate how much total, unprocessed, and processed meat they ate, and they underwent repeated cognitive tests over time to track changes in memory and thinking ability. The researchers also genotyped participants for the APOE ε4 Alzheimer’s risk gene, then compared rates of cognitive decline and dementia across different levels of meat consumption while adjusting for factors like age, education, lifestyle, and overall diet.

The Takeaway: Among older adults who carried the APOE ε4 gene variant linked to higher Alzheimer’s risk, those who ate more unprocessed meat experienced slower cognitive decline and a lower risk of developing dementia over the study period. For people without the gene variant, meat consumption showed no clear relationship with cognitive outcomes. However, processed meat was associated with higher dementia risk, regardless of genetic status.

Keep in Mind: Because this was an observational study based on a self-reported diet, it can only show an association — not prove that meat consumption directly protects against cognitive decline.
