Tiny Engine, Huge Claims: Until recently, you might not have thought about mitochondria since high school bio. But lately, the wellness world — including influencers and political figures — is talking about the tiny organelles a lot. Mitochondria have also become big business in the supplement industry, with products claiming they can support mitochondrial function. But what is the best evidence-backed way to support mitochondria?

The Benefits: Often referred to as the “powerhouse of the cell,” mitochondria perform important cellular duties. They convert food into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which releases energy needed for metabolism, muscle function, DNA synthesis, and neurotransmission. Mitochondria support the immune system and keep cells healthy. Like most things, mitochondria decline and become less functional as we age, which is why mitochondrial health has joined the conversation about lifespan and chronic disease. Experts say it’s still not clear how much mitochondria are driving the aging process.

How to Do It: The best research-backed ways to improve mitochondrial function are — surprise, surprise — the basic cornerstones of good health: Regular exercise, specifically aerobic, HIIT, and resistance training. A diet rich in fiber, healthy fats, antioxidants, and B vitamins. Plenty of sleep. As for emerging therapies, like NAD+ or CoQ10 supplements, cold-plunging, and infrared light, the jury is still out on how well they work.
