Some couples, however, have decided to make sleeping apart a more permanent practice. “Sleep divorce” is a growing trend among couples who are incompatible when it comes to slumber. Even some celebrities have talked about it openly, including Kaley Cuoco, Cameron Diaz, and Carson Daly.

What People Are Saying: Nearly one-third of couples are “sleep divorced,” according to data from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. In Hilton’s 2025 Trends Report, 63% of people reported sleeping better when they’re alone. Experts say sleeping apart can have some real benefits — irritability, exhaustion, and resentment from night after night of bad sleep can impact the relationship. Plus, chronic inadequate sleep can have serious health consequences.

What to Know: Understandably, there are some concerns with the arrangement — namely, if a “sleep divorce” is the first step toward an actual break-up. Sleeping together can strengthen the connection between partners, so setting aside time during the day and scheduling regular date nights are crucial for keeping the relationship healthy and making the “divorce” work.
