The Power, and Challenge, of the “Let Them” Theory

The Trend: Mel Robbins’ “Let Them” theory started as a viral 2023 social post and has since evolved into a New York Times bestselling book (see it here). The premise is simple: stop trying to control others. Let them flake, let them disagree, let them act as they will — and focus instead on your own peace. Robbins says the idea came from her daughter, and its empowering minimalism clearly struck a nerve in a world overloaded with reactivity.
What People Are Saying: Fans love the clarity: it’s an antidote to overthinking and emotional micromanagement. “Let Them” has become shorthand for setting boundaries without drama. But critics argue that the philosophy falls apart beyond mild interpersonal friction. As one writer put it, “The theory does sort of suck when it comes to actions other people take that negatively impact the world.”
What to Know: The “Let Them” theory is popular for a reason. We could all benefit from focusing more on what we can control, and less on what we can’t. The challenge, of course, is knowing the difference.
