You know that feeling of calm and clarity that washes over you after a run or a bike ride? It may not just be in your head. A small new study found that just 20 minutes of cycling increased brain-wave activity linked to memory and learning. So next time you’re feeling a little stuck, maybe skip the third cup of coffee and go for a quick spin instead.

Your Brain May Have a Hidden Ability to Repair Itself

On The Mend: We hear a lot about aging and cognitive decline, but here’s a bit of good news about our brains: They may be able to repair themselves better than scientists initially expected through specialized cells that can help areas of the brain damaged by injury or disease.

The Study: Astrocytes are a type of brain glial cell that keep brain tissue healthy, control blood flow, and provide nutrients to nerve cells. It was long-believed that once astrocytes were destroyed, they were gone for good. But researchers at the University of Zurich have identified a special group of regenerative astrocytes, which suggests this might not be the case. Using photon microscopy, they studied the brains of living mice and tracked which genes and signaling pathways became active during the repair process. The special astrocytes helped to rebuild damaged cellular networks by creating new nuclei and then helping to transport them to damaged areas.

The Takeaway: The research has the potential to evolve and offer more targeted ways to repair damaged brain cells if scientists can determine how to activate these particular genes and pathways.

Keep in Mind: This study was done on the brains of mice, not humans.

What if Cravings Aren’t Your Fault?

Did you hear about the group of PhD scientists from Johns Hopkins, Harvard, and Stanford who walked into a lab—and left with a breakthrough probiotic in hand?

These scientists explored the gut/GLP-1 connection and helped bring live Akkermansia muciniphila to the probiotics market. The result of their work? Pendulum’s Metabolic Daily probiotic.

This particular strain has been studied for its potential to support the gut lining, metabolic health, and digestive health.**

From Spray Tans to Peptides: The Rise of Tanning Without UV Exposure

The Trend: Lots of us love the look of a tan, but not the skin damage and risk of cancer that can come with it. For Gen Z especially, tanning is back, but so is the desire to get that bronzed look without the UV exposure. That may help explain the rise of sunless tanning techniques, from classic lotions and spray tans, to peptides that claim to stimulate pigment-producing cells.

What People Are Saying: Experts say spray tanning is experiencing a boom — and it’s getting more popular among men. They’re certainly safer for your skin than the sun’s rays, but they can also come with a hefty price tag (sometimes running around $500 a session), and often don’t last more than a few days.

Another sunless trend? The “Barbie peptide,” which is an injectable called melanotan II that can darken your skin without UV exposure. Fans claim it can give you a tan “from the inside out,” but it’s still unregulated, under-researched, and can cause unpleasant (and dangerous) side effects.

What to Know: Sun exposure is a major cause of premature skin aging — the exact opposite of the youthful glow many tanning fans are trying to achieve. So if you’re set on being tan, a spray tan or sunless tanning lotion — plus ample sunscreen — is still your best bet.

Could Your Workout Recovery Routine Impact Your Fertility?

You Should Know: Saunas and cold plunges have cemented their place in workout recovery routines, but more recently, they’ve joined the testosterone-optimization toolkit. Proponents on social media promise higher T and healthier sperm, and you may have even heard that either tactic could increase your chances of becoming a parent.

Going Deeper: Testosterone and fertility aren’t the same thing, and heat and cold can affect the two differently. While studies generally find little change in testosterone, regular sauna use has been linked to temporary declines in sperm count. Research also shows that exposure to high environmental heat can negatively impact sperm quality.

The evidence for cold plunging as a testosterone or fertility hack is also limited. What little research does exist on it isn’t favorable: some small studies have found that whole-body cryotherapy and cold-water immersion can lower or blunt testosterone responses after exercise, and contrast therapy produces little to no change.

Takeaway: Two things. First, testosterone isn’t a surefire proxy for fertility — higher levels of the hormone don’t automatically mean more or healthier sperm. Second, neither heat nor cold exposure has compelling evidence backing claims of increased testosterone or fertility.

Bottom Line: Enjoy the sauna or cold plunge if you like them — just don’t count on either as a fertility hack. And if you’re actively trying to conceive, you may want to reconsider frequent high-heat exposure.

✾ What We're Cooking

BLT Pasta Salad

Serves: 8-10 | Cook Time: 50 minutes

This BLT pasta salad takes the classic sandwich and turns it into a crowd-friendly summer side, with crisp romaine, smoky bacon, juicy tomatoes, and rotini coated in a creamy dressing. The clever part is salting and draining the tomatoes first, then using some of their flavorful juices to thin and season the dressing. The pasta is also cooked slightly past al dente and tossed with vinegar while still warm, helping it absorb more flavor. Add the lettuce just before serving to keep it crisp and crunchy.

❦ HEALTHY HABIT

Keep a “Bare Minimum” Workout Ready

Some days, the full workout is not happening. That doesn’t mean the day is a wash. Keep a backup version you can do in 10 minutes: a walk, a short mobility flow, push-ups and squats, or a few sets with dumbbells. A smaller workout keeps the habit alive without requiring a motivational speech.
