Is Wegovy Covered by Insurance? What Medicare’s New $50 GLP-1 Coverage Means

by Phil Blechman, July 1, 2026

For most people, the hardest part of taking Wegovy or Zepbound is getting insurance to cover it. A new federal program is about to change that for millions of older Americans. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program takes effect July 1, 2026. The temporary pilot program allows those with Medicare, the federal health insurance program that serves as the largest single healthcare purchaser in the U.S., to purchase glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1) medications at pharmacies with a flat $50 copay for a one-month supply. The program extends through the end of 2027. Extending it further requires a law passed by Congress.

Understanding Wegovy — What Is a GLP-1?

GLP-1s are anti-obesity medications that have been shown to reduce body weight by upwards of 15-20% and were discovered in the 1970s. Since 2005, they have been used to treat people with type 2 diabetes. Just shy of a decade later, their use has extended to help treat those suffering from obesity.

As of the latest national data (August 2021–August 2023), about 41% of adult women and 39% of adult men in the US have obesity, with roughly another third of all adults classified as overweight, including more than 13 million people with Medicare. A disproportionate number are those with lower socioeconomic status.

The popularity of GLP-1s, like Wegovy and Zepbound, has increased significantly in recent years, with approximately 12% of US adults having taken a GLP-1 as of 2024 — roughly a 700% increase over the prior four years. As of late 2025, nearly 15% of all adult women in the US take a GLP-1, like Wegovy.

The Cost of GLP-1s

Since obesity is likely to lead to lower life expectancy due to the litany of risks associated with it, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver diseases, stroke, obstructive sleep apnea, and some cancers, it’s understandable why GLP-1 medications like Wegovy are attractive.

The cost of GLP-1s, however, is less appealing. Paying out of pocket for these medications can cost more than $900 per month. Currently, federal law does not allow Medicare to cover Part D drugs, including those prescribed solely for weight loss (i.e., someone who wants to take Wegovy to lose weight).

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, however, operates outside of the Medicare Part D benefit’s coverage, making access to these medications much more affordable. The program is estimated to allow nearly 4 million additional people access to GLP-1s.

Is Wegovy Covered by Insurance?

The Bridge is aimed at older adults — it covers Wegovy and Zepbound for a $50 copay for the roughly 4 million Medicare enrollees who qualify. For everyone else, access still comes down to your plan. Commercial coverage for weight loss has gotten harder to come by, and even covered patients usually face prior authorization. If your plan says no, manufacturer programs like Novo Nordisk’s NovoCare and Eli Lilly’s LillyDirect can bring Wegovy and Zepbound down to roughly $199 to $499 a month.
