Lonely? Go Outside

Wilderness Solitaire: The key to combating loneliness is surrounding yourself with lots of people, right? Not quite, according to a new study published in Health & Place. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher, but the research suggests that spending time outdoors — especially alone — may strengthen feelings of connection that are linked to lower loneliness.
The Study: Researchers from Norway surveyed more than 2,500 people from the region surrounding the country’s largest lake and asked them what types of outdoor activities they did and how often they did them alone. Using a method called structural equation modeling, the researchers found that people’s emotional attachment to a place (specifically, the lake and surrounding area) and their connectedness to nature were associated with reduced loneliness — and that these relationships were stronger when activities were done alone.
The Takeaway: The activities participants did outside mattered. Ones that involved quiet introspection and noticing of aesthetic and sensory details — like taking a walk and hearing water lapping or seeing vibrant flowers — showed stronger links to connectedness to nature, which in turn was tied to lower loneliness. More goal-oriented activities, like exercising, showed weaker relationships with that pathway.
Keep in Mind: The study was limited to a very specific place and population, and the findings show associations — not causation.

Living Mediterranean Is About More Than the Food

More Than a Diet: There’s a lot to be said for the Mediterranean diet. But a new study suggests the bigger lesson is about how people in that region actually live. How to Do It: For the diet part, start with a mostly plant-forward plate built around olive oil, fish, beans, and minimally processed foods. Then add in regular movement, consistent sleep, social time with people you like, and breaks from your screens each day for the full Mediterranean effect.
The Benefits: The MEDIET4ALL project published in Frontiers in Nutrition asked over 4,000 adults throughout 10 Mediterranean and neighboring countries if they followed “MedLife” patterns. These broad patterns involved diet, movement, sleep, social activities, stress, and screen time. They also surveyed participants’ overall well-being — factors like life satisfaction, anxiety, insomnia, and depression. Higher-ranking countries tended to report better sleep, more exercise, stronger social ties, and less stress, with Spain coming out on top. This was an observational study though, so it can't prove cause and effect. But it's a helpful guide to a wholesome way of life regardless.

Is Drinking a “Liquid Salad” Actually Good for You?
Karolina Grabowska/Unsplash
The Trend: Sippable pouches filled with juices and liquified fruits and vegetables are super hot in the wellness world right now. The category, nicknamed “liquid salad,” includes squeezable pouches of blended greens with added vitamins, as well as powders boasting dozens of concentrated forms of produce. And the brands that make these products often promise better gut health and improved energy levels for busy people looking for easy ways to eat healthy.
What People Are Saying: Conceptually, liquid salad is really just juicing with better branding. They still offer many of the vitamins and minerals found in whole produce, but the skins and seeds (where most of the fiber lives) are usually discarded. Many of these packaged products contain only a gram or two of fiber per serving, and processing can also chip away at certain vitamins, too.
What to Know: Drinking your produce is way better than getting none at all, so these can work in a pinch when you're busy. But check the labels when shopping for these products and select some with at least five grams of fiber. Also, keep an eye out for whole-food ingredients rather than fruit concentrates or added sugars.

Yes, you can always throw together greens and a couple veggies in a few minutes, but this is an example of taking the long (salad) route — and you’ll be able to taste the difference. Simple lettuce wedges make the base, but they’re covered in a confited spring onion and sour cream dressing, along with parsley, mint and basil. Homemade croutons and a toasted seed topping of pepitas, chia, and sesame seeds add a satisfying, contrasting crunch, while radish and avocado slices give it a last pop of spring freshness.
